Advent Calendars: A Sweet Tradition and How It Started
Intro
Advent calendars started as a simple daily countdown. Today they’re a small, joyful ritual that makes December feel special. Here’s how we got from paper windows to handcrafted chocolates, and why the tradition endures.
A quick origin story
Advent calendars trace back to 19th-century family countdowns in Europe. Early versions marked days with chalk or paper images. Printed calendar windows followed, and the “open a little surprise each day” moment caught on.
The chocolate era
Over time, pictures gave way to sweets. Chocolate calendars turned the daily reveal into a tiny celebration. Modern versions range from tea and toys to beauty and coffee, but chocolate still feels like the classic.
Why we still love them
One window per day means a pause, a smile, and a moment you can count on. It’s simple, repeatable, and somehow still magical.
How Sweet P’s does it
Our calendar holds 25 handcrafted treats made in small batches here in Wisconsin: truffles, caramels, chocolates, and seasonal favorites.
